MEDIA & THE USMS
The U.S. Marshals service has been known as the “Silent Service” due to the lack of publicity attributed to the agency. Limited publicity received by the agency is mainly because they do not a have a public information office and there is a general lack of sensationalism that surrounds the various valuable services they provide. The only time they really make the news is if there is a major fugitive who is captured or if there happens to be a shooting in a federal courtroom.
However, the agency has been represented in various television shows and movies. Depictions in the media of the marshals can be found in films such as the Fugitive and the sequel U.S. Marshals. Television shows like Eureka, In Plain Sight, Justified, Manhunters: Fugitive Task Force, and Chase also depict the USMS engaging in various enforcement duties. These and other media accounts have largely shaped public perceptions of the U.S. Marshals and help to provide some historical background to the agency (Bumgarner, 2013).
